WELCOME TO VANCOUVER ISLAND HOTELS
Vancouver Island is a beautiful place. Those that live here feel quite lucky to do so. Vancouver Island is the largest island on the west coast of
North America and one of the nicest. In 2005, the readers of Conde Nast Traveler magazine ranked Vancouver Island as the Top North American Island. This is the fourth consecutive year Vancouver Island has had this honour. And readers of Travel + Leisure recently named Vancouver Island as the Best Island Destination in the Continental US/Canada. Now those are some serious accolades from traveling folks that know a good thing when they see it!
Many of the folks that do come to Vancouver Island are often surprised and taken back by the sheer size of the place. Vancouver Island is over 460 kilometres (286 miles) in length - almost the length of Ireland, and up to 100 kilometres (60 miles) in width. The total area is 31 284 square kilometres (12,076 square miles) and we have over 3 440 kilometres (2,136 miles) of coastline. We're about the same size as Taiwan and three quarters the size of Switzerland. So no, you can't see it all in one day! Our advice, spend a few days.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF VANCOUVER ISLAND
The First Nations people have lived on Vancouver Island for centuries. The Island’s oldest known archaeological site, in Port Hardy, dates back more than 8000 years. The First Nations people were closely tied to the sea - they lived in coastal villages sheltered from storms during the winter, and moved to seasonal food gathering sites during spring, summer and fall.
Then in the spring of 1778, Captain James Cook's ships, the Resolution and Discovery, landed at Friendship Cove in Vancouver Island's Nootka Sound and became the first Europeans to meet the First Nations of Vancouver Island. Soon after on June 30, 1790, the First Nation people of Albert Head (now part of Sooke) found Spanish explorer Manuel Quimper on their beach, claiming the land in the name of the King of Spain. Britain and Spain nearly went to war over possession of Vancouver Island, but their dispute was settled peaceably, granting access to the British.
As you explore the island you'll see the influences of the British and Spanish explorers in place names of communities, islands and beaches.
The growth of a non-native population began in the mid-19th Century when the Hudson’s Bay Co. established trading posts on the Island. Nanaimo boasts the last remaining fort (or Bastion) that the Hudson Bay Company built. Farming, logging and coal mining spread northward from Fort Camosun, later named Fort Victoria, the beginnings of the city of Victoria.
WHY VANCOUVER ISLAND HOTELS DOT COM?
Vancouver Island is blessed not only with outstanding natural beauty, great attractions and unbelievably mild weather but also with some excellent hotels, motels, inns and lodges.
Finding reliable and trustworthy recommendations and information about accommodation can be difficult at times. So we have developed and maintain this site so that guests to Vancouver Island can have access to a website that provides honest, straight forward recommendations for accommodations on Vancouver Island.
Among the hundreds of websites recommending accommodation and lodging on Vancouver Island, why is this the right one for you? Well we've been to all of the places we recommend. We know or have met most of the owners or managers of the properties on this site. And if we haven't met them, then we've had reliable recommendations about them and their properties from our colleagues in the Vancouver Island accommodation industry and from our repeat guests. All of the properties are rated higher than a 3 star by Canada Select or AAA. Some are luxurious beachfront resorts. Others are family owned and operated hotels and motels like The Buccaneer Inn. They are places we have or will stay at.
We've organized this site by the various regions of the Island. Each region has a review of at least 3 properties for each community.
Just so you know, none of the accommodation listed on this site have paid to be here. They don't advertise on our site, there are no listing fees and we do not receive any commission from any bookings that they receive. In fact some of them might not even know we're recommending them. We've built this site to raise awareness about The Buccaneer Inn and like minded hotels on Vancouver Island.
Wander throughout the site and enjoy your holiday on Vancouver Island. We know you'll love it.
Your hosts,
Dave, Marlene and Christopher
